Anti-wear hydraulic fluid is hydraulic oil carrying additives that chemically bond to metal surfaces and form a thin sacrificial layer at the points where the oil film gets too thin to keep parts apart. The additives wear away instead of the pump. In the international classification system this is the Его Величество family under ISO 6743-4; in the North American market the same product is usually labelled AW, followed by its ISO 3448 viscosity grade: AW 32, AW 46, AW 68.
The practical consequence: AW fluid is the correct default for almost any pump-driven hydraulic system, and a non-additised oil of the same viscosity is not a substitute. What AW does not mean is a quality tier or a load rating. Heavier, slower, more concentrated loads need extreme-pressure chemistry instead, and the boundary between the two is where most specification errors happen.
Why a hydraulic system needs the additive at all
A hydraulic pump is meant to run on a full oil film, with moving surfaces separated by pressurised fluid and never touching. That condition holds while speed, load and viscosity stay inside the design window. It stops holding at start-up before pressure builds, at direction reversals where relative speed passes through zero, under shock loading, and anywhere clearances have worn wider than design.
In those moments the film collapses to less than the height of the surface roughness, and the peaks on the two surfaces make contact. Metal-to-metal contact at pressure removes material.
An antiwear additive is the answer to that specific problem. Under the heat and pressure generated at those contact points, it reacts with the metal surface and leaves a soft compound layer that shears in place of the parent metal. The film is consumed and continuously reformed as long as additive remains in the oil.

That mechanism explains two properties buyers often find surprising. The additive is depleted over time, so an oil that tests fine on viscosity can still be near the end of its protective life. And the additive only acts where contact occurs, so a system running properly in full film consumes almost none of it.
AW and EP are not the same thing
Both additive families exist to handle contact, and they are frequently confused, because both appear on data sheets as wear protection.
The difference is load. Antiwear additives are formulated for the lighter, distributed contact found in hydraulic pumps, bushings and vane assemblies. Extreme-pressure additives are formulated for the concentrated, high-load sliding contact in gearboxes. Under extreme pressure conditions the performance of AW additives becomes insufficient and designated EP additives are required, per the antiwear additive classification.
| Antiwear (AW) | Extreme pressure (EP) | |
|---|---|---|
| Typical duty | Hydraulic pumps, bushings, vanes | Gearboxes, hypoid axles, heavy sliding |
| Load regime | Lighter, distributed contact | Concentrated, high-load contact |
| Активация | Reacts at contact-point temperature and pressure | Reacts at higher temperatures generated by heavier load |
| Common chemistry | ZDDP, ashless phosphorus compounds | Sulfur-phosphorus compounds |
| Risk if misapplied | Insufficient protection under gear loads | Chemically aggressive toward yellow metals |
The two families overlap. Many antiwear additives function as extreme-pressure additives, and organophosphates and sulfur compounds appear in both. The distinction that matters for a purchase order is which duty the fluid was formulated for, not which chemical family the additive belongs to.
Applying the wrong one has consequences in both directions. Putting a hydraulic AW fluid into a heavily loaded gear drive leaves the gear teeth under-protected. Putting a high-EP gear oil into a system with brass or bronze components risks corroding them, which is the same failure mode covered in GL-4 vs GL-5 gear oil.
Zinc, ashless, and why some systems specify one
The most widely used antiwear additive is zinc dialkyldithiophosphate, usually written ZDDP. It is the default in formulated engine oils and standard anti-wear hydraulic oils, and it does three jobs rather than one: antiwear protection, corrosion inhibition, and oxidation resistance.
Some systems specify a zinc-free или ashless anti-wear oil instead. The reasons are specific, and none of them is that ashless oils protect better in general.
- Filterability. Zinc compounds can react with water present in the system and form deposits that plug fine filters. Systems with tight filtration and a known moisture risk favour ashless chemistry, which is why вода в гидравлическом масле is worth controlling regardless of which additive is in use.
- Yellow-metal compatibility. Certain pumps and valves contain bronze or brass components that some zinc chemistries attack over time.
- Environmental and disposal rules. Some sites restrict heavy-metal content in waste oil.
- Catalyst or process contamination risk. Zinc carryover is unacceptable in some process environments.
Both types exist in the same viscosity grades. Zhongtian produces a standard anti-wear hydraulic oil and a separate ashless variant, both in ISO VG 32, 46, 68 and 100. The decision between them is made by the equipment maker’s fluid requirement and the site conditions, not by which one sounds more advanced.
Other antiwear chemistries exist for conditions ZDDP does not suit. Tricresyl phosphate is used where operating temperature is high, including turbine engine lubricants and some hydraulic fluids. Stearic acid adheres through reversible adsorption below 150 °C, which limits it to mild contact conditions.
What “AW” does not tell you
The AW label answers one question: does this oil carry antiwear additives. Four things it does not answer, all of which appear on the technical data sheet:
- Viscosity behaviour away from 40 °C. The grade number is measured at one temperature. Viscosity index and pour point decide cold-start and hot-running behaviour, and two oils sharing an AW grade can differ sharply on both. The comparison is worked through in AW32 vs AW46 vs AW68.
- How much additive, and of what quality. “Contains antiwear additives” is not a dosage. Pump-bench approvals are the closest thing to an independent answer.
- Чистота и возможность фильтрации. A high-cleanliness grade is specified by cleanliness class, not by the AW designation.
- Oxidation life. How long the additive survives in service depends on the base oil and the operating temperature, which is why a system running hot consumes its additive package faster.
How to verify an anti-wear claim
Any supplier can print AW on a drum. These are the checks that carry weight, in order of how much they prove:
- A pump-manufacturer approval. The Parker-Denison HF series is the widely recognised one, and it requires the fluid to pass a pump-bench programme rather than a paper declaration. Ask which HF level the product holds and request the approval document; Zhongtian’s high-cleanliness anti-wear oil carries HF-0.
- A named performance specification. The DIN 51524 series is the common European reference for hydraulic oils, with part 2 covering the HLP anti-wear class, and equipment makers frequently name their own requirement instead. Either way, ask which document the claim is made against.
- The technical data sheet for the exact grade, showing measured viscosity, viscosity index, pour point and flash point rather than a category description.
- A test report from an accredited laboratory. Zhongtian’s group testing company is accredited under China’s CMA and CNAS schemes, and CNAS is a signatory to the ILAC mutual recognition arrangement, which is what makes its reports usable outside China.
If a supplier cannot produce the second and third of those for the grade being quoted, the AW claim rests on the label alone. The wider supplier check is in our руководство по поиску поставщиков смазочных материалов.
Часто задаваемые вопросы
Is anti-wear hydraulic fluid the same as AW hydraulic oil? Yes. AW is the market abbreviation for anti-wear. The same product family is designated HM under ISO 6743-4.
Can I use anti-wear hydraulic fluid in a gearbox? Not as a substitute for gear oil. Antiwear additives are formulated for the lighter contact in hydraulic components; gear drives generally need extreme-pressure additives and often a higher viscosity grade.
What does ashless anti-wear hydraulic oil mean? It means the antiwear additive contains no zinc, so it leaves no metallic ash residue. It is specified for filterability, yellow-metal compatibility, or disposal reasons, not because it protects better.
Does AW hydraulic oil expire? The additive package depletes in service and the base oil oxidises, so the fluid has a service life independent of its viscosity reading. An oil can still be in grade and no longer protecting.
Is AW 46 an ISO standard? No. ISO 3448 defines the viscosity grade 46. AW is a market designation, not an ISO category. The ISO service family that corresponds to it is HM under ISO 6743-4.
Do I need anti-wear fluid if my system has low pressure? Usually yes. Even low-pressure systems pass through boundary contact at start-up and reversal. The equipment manual is the authority; where it specifies HM or AW, a plain mineral oil of the same viscosity does not meet it.
